In December 2003 Alif Laila Women Wing was initiated as a part of the Female Awareness Programme to instill in young women civic consciousness and a desire to work toward a more equal society, and to speak up for their rights. Members of the Women’s Club are required to attend meetings regularly. Punctuality and enthusiasm to actively carry out the assigned responsibilities are the foremost requisites for our members.
We received a micro credit grant form the German Embassy in 2004 which enabled us to start a new project for women who have skills in crafts and embroideries but did not know how to market their skills. Alif Laila Designs is now the place that has set in motion nearly twenty-five such women to earn between Rs. 3000 4000 a month. They feel both empowered and confident.
Alif Laila has also started work with the women of Sheikhupura to encourage them to use their skills to generate a better income so that they can build a better tomorrow for their children.
To market our products, among other efforts, Alif Laila also hosts regular exhibitions where all its products are displayed. We have a line of hand embroidered designer bags which have been very popular in Lahore as well as Karachi. We also make book bags, notebooks, envelopes, hand stamped paper bags, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, bedcovers, cushions and other accessories for the home.
Exclusive orders for linen, bags and clothes can be placed at the Alif Laila Design House where our trained designer is available for consultation also. |
